Motherhood

Before watching the video, please turn off the music.
If anyone knows me they would think I am crazy by posting this. However, I thought the content was good, and so true for most mothers. Even though I don't practice religion, I do believe in God, and I admire those who find solace and peace in his teachings. Her point is well taken, and I needed to hear it. How many of us don't always understand our role as mothers? or ask ourselves why we feel a certain way about our mothers? I got the link from a blog I follow. Resolved2worship has a beautiful family of seven I believe, and she does wonderful photography. I am drawn to her peaceful images of a loving and fun family.

Odds and Ends are sitting on my desk. I am working on a nightgown for Olivia, a pair of pajamas for Nicolas. Christmas cards still have to be written, and of course my mound of ironing still continues to climb. However, I took an hour for myself to get some sewing prepared. Hopefully I will be able to show something this week.

Trials and Turbulations of a Mom

Being a mom is such hard work.  I mean both physically and mentally exhausting at times.  Today I decided to take the kids to the pizza place for lunch.  I had promised the kids all week to go, but somehow always talked them out of it.  Since I had nothing important on my plate today, I decided to give it a go, and off we went.  Olivia is not so fond of pizza, and usually gets a bit tired around this time of day, but we had fun, and enjoyed our lunch together as a family.  I convinced the kids that we should go to Target next, and buy them a new pool.  Excited, the kids agreed.  I knew I could accomplish a few of my tasks in this store, and the pool would keep them pleasantly occupied.  At least I thought so.

The pool I bought them last week at Wal-mart was broken.  Obviously there is a hole in the seam, and yes I will get a refund.  Everytime I try to let it dry out to repackage the pool, the kids play with the waterhose and get it all wet again.  So I decided to buy a new one at Target.  The kids were excited and both willing to join me until I diverted my attention to other things.  I am trying to buy Olivia a pair of flip-flops for the garden.  She always wears her good shoes, and everytime I buy her a new pair, she refuses to put them on.  It was no different today.  She threw a typical toddler tantrum in the middle of the store.  I forced her to put them on, but she immediately took them off again.  Aggrevated, and bit worn out, I continued to shop for a few things.  Nicolas let me know more then once that he was bored, by huffing and puffing the whole time.  When I confronted both of the whiners, I realized that our store visit was just not worth the aggrevation.  I put the pool back on the shelf, left the other things at the check-out, and packed both kids in the car and went home, not even stopping at the Ice Cream parlor or the grocery store as I promised.  If the kids reacted this ungrateful to the purchase of a $50 pool, then so be it, they just would not get one.  Being mom is sometimes such an ungrateful job, but when the kids cannot spend 10 minutes in a store while mom grabs a few important things, then obviously an important lesson has not been taught.

It was not easy for me to leave the store.  Besides the fact that I needed toothepaste and a few other important things, the fact that  I broke both of their hearts was really hard on me.   However, I knew that my kids were acting like spoiled brats, so my obligation as a mom was quite clear.  Like I said, tough job, but in the end when my son apologized and told me he loved me, it made it all worthwhile.  (Of course, I am no fool, five minutes later he asked whether we were going shopping again?)  The test will come tomorrow when we try the whole thing again.  I am exhausted already.

Found these lovely dresses on a new blog called Mark it with a B
The pattern is Simplicity 2711.  Too big for Olivia, but definitely one
I intend to make in the future.  A wonderful blog I truly enjoyed reading.

"Behavior Modification" for mommy

Hard to believe that she had a fever of 100.2 and was still willing to model her new top for me.  On our way to the doctor, I slipped it on not expecting much, but she managed to smile.  She has a cold, a virus maybe, but no strept throat.  She should be alright again in about three days.  The nights are hard, because she coughs alot, and cries.  Tonight she fell asleep on my chest, and together we rocked for almost an hour.  I could feel her heart beating, and with every breath she took, I realized she was sinking into a nice deep sleep.   It was a wonderful fulfilling moment, and maybe one I needed to give me the strength to believe in myself.

Let me just say that Nicolas is a wonderful child.  He is smart, well mannered, charming and I am very proud of him.  His teachers love him.  His friends love him.  I am happy to be his mom, however he has always been a whiner, and very lazy.  He is timid and shy, and we have sheltered him for a very long time.  Whenever we take him somewhere new - a museum, the beach, a school, a play or even Disney on Ice - he whines, cries and gives us a hard time.  He wants to go home, he throws small tantrums, and makes everyone's life hell, even though we always assumed that he was uncomfortable, and his personality was just difficult.  This is the first book I have read that addresses these problems and tells the parent to stop!  This behavior can be reversed.  This is not a phase.  This is not a genetic thing.  It can be dealt with, so why not try it.  By the way, his speech teacher, who also teaches autistic children says the same thing.
I decided to skip to the end of the book (don't worry I will go back and read the chapters missed), and find out what parents need to do to resolve some of these problems.  Once I read the ending, I was even more convinced that this book might just have the answers I need to work out some of my parental dilemmas.  They do a great job of not only targeting the child, but the problems of the parents.  As a matter of fact, they target the problems of your marriage and your parenting techniques.  No I don't have any marital problems, but I must admit that we don't always agree on our goals.  My hubby tends to baby the children alot, whereas I concentrate on the disciplining. When both children act up, there are times when tension is visible in our house and we don't deal well with it.   According to these doctors, most marriages consist of parents that "confront" differently.  We do.  They advise to attack only one problem at a time, and stay focused and supportive of your goal.  Most of the time, parents fail when success becomes visible.  Once the child has clearly grasped the rules, abides by them, and realizes the boundries that they have been given, the parents bend the rules to reward the children.  This not only sets the child back, but creates an even more difficult behavior to eliminate.  The parents have to work even harder to change the childs behavior.  Whether it is guilt, joy, love or excitement that causes the parents to give in, the stress that is created can be damaging to both the child-parent relationship, as well as the spousal relationship.  Yes, it sounds so deep, but also very sobering to me.  The example they give is of a child that refuses to go to bed.  Oh you know, the child that gets up upteen times, never has a set bedtime, sleeps in the parents room, is always hungry, thirsty, or can't sleep.  Once the child finally figures out that his bedtime is at 8pm, and mom and dad won't give in, he will go to bed on his own.  I agree.  My children go to bed at 7pm, and alot of times, they just say they are tired and begin to get ready on their own.  Very nice.  But in this case, because the mom always gives in and reads to him, or rocks her son to sleep, it is the husband that has to make sure she stays focused on their goal.  Once the son begins to show signs that he is willing to go to bed on his own, the parents feel guilty that they are enjoying their evenings all alone.  Know that feeling?  Yes, I do.  They decide to go and check on him, and tell him how proud they are of him.  The boy is almost asleep when the parents enter his room.  He sees this as a sign to get up and start his bad behavior all over again.  This time the parents blame each other, fight, and cannot get their son back to bed.  The parents have to start their "behavior modification" all over again, and this time it takes longer and is much harder, because the son expects his parents to "give in".
So, the first thing I did today was keep my cool.  I counted that my son whined eight times before 11am.  I gave him firm and quick answers to his questions, and then ignored him until he changed his tone of voice.  He also cleaned his room tonight with a little help from mom.  Although they say to let the child struggle a bit, I thought it best to help him a few times, and then leave him up to his own devices.  No matter what, I stayed firm on the consequences.  He refused to clean it last night, after lying to me, so I kept him away from daycare today and all of his friends.  He was not happy, and I did feel harsh and guilty, but we really had a great day.  I held my own, and I even told the kids to go play so that I could pay my bills today.  I may not have been their best friend, but I definitely felt like a "good mom".

A Cloudy Day a Springy Outfit

My day started way too early, and ended on a pretty bad note too. The only good that came out of it was this little pair of pants that I decided to make for Olivia. The kids woke me up at about 5:30am, and after getting to bed a little after midnight, I was in no mood to rise and shine. However, I finally decided it was best to make the kids a nice breakfast, and get my day started. Wrong decision.

Olivia was in a "toddler mood" today. She had one tantrum after another, would not get along with her brother at all, and barely listened to any of my threats. By the time dinner arrived, and she said "I don't want to eat" "Yuck" I had enough. I took her from the table and put her in her room and she went to bed without dinner. Yes, I know that sounds rather cruel, but believe me tomorrow will come soon enough, and she will think twice before pulling her usual stunts again.

I ended up cuddling with Nicolas awhile in bed, because "monster eyes" were staring at him through the window (no way possible). Those monster eyes were probably mine. My blood pressure was pretty high this evening. I am never sure if it is caused by my anxiety or something I ate. I am making an appt. with the doctor first thing tomorrow morning. Maybe she can give me some really good "RELAXATION" pills. I am beginning to think I am allergic to the voices of my own children. I tease you not. Around 4pm, after making Oatmeal cookies with the kids, I just could not listen to them anymore. They never stop talking to me and following me around. God, I don't want to be that kind of mom. I want to be the patient one. The kind that takes them on my lap and lets them tell me all that is on their minds, but I just cannot. I feel as if my brain is clouded, and I just cannot think a clear thought. This only happens on the weekend, when my days are long, and my temper is short. Is it the blood pressure that is causing the quick temper, or the temper that is causing the high blood pressure? I did nothing today except make the beds, build a fort, and make three meals. I have so much to do, but it can wait. Tomorrow is another day, and nothing is more important then sleep right now.
